On Wednesday evening, 13th October 2010, Imagination Gaming descended on the Coffee Revolution at Sheffield University’s Student Union. The event attracted a wide range of interest from students still studying for their A Levels through to those of more mature years, with plenty of people from the campus itself. Interestingly the majority of the university students were from
overseas and this led us to wonder if it reflected the greater involvement and enjoyment of modern board and card games outside the UK.
Thirty people played upwards of fifteen games ranging from the brilliant multi player solitaire board game Take It Easy!, tactile games like Qwirkle and Rumis, modern gateway board games including TransEuropa through to the funny card games like Straw and just plain silly ones like Kleine Fische and Pinguin Party. A range of games played that however broad, left a further 20+ untried in the crates we had brought with us for the evening. However it allowed the attendees the opportunity to try games they had heard of but not played or just felt looked interesting.
The evening certainly seemed to have fanned the fires of interest in modern card and board games with the following being just one of the comments and observations on the evening, “this is going to get me back into games”.
Others sought to exchange emails and telephone numbers and intending to try and meet up again at least once a month, in spite of the fact that they had never met before.
Another attendee had played more medium weight board games like Agricola but had been looking for a group or people to play more light weight games with where the emphasis was more social than brain burning.
Another person commented that if she had known how much fun they where going to be (she came along knowing nothing about the games on offer) she would not have arranged to go off half way through the evening.
Hopefully Imagination Gaming will return again to foster the enthusiasm for this gentle, social and fun pastime.
